DAY 4: jesus prays for himself, his disicples and all believers
WE ARE AN ABIDING PEOPLE
Jesus has already prayed for us, “that they (us) may be one as we are one- 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity”. He wants unity for us, unity like the community of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three in one. Jesus says he is in us and the Father is in Him. Maybe today that sounds confusing, maybe there is some mystery there. Spend a moment acknowledging that Jesus is in you. That you have been brought into community with God. You are so close to him, he lives in you! You might even want to do this with someone else as an act of unity.
BIBLE READING
Today’s reading is John 17. Within this, Jesus is praying and says 17 “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” Let’s thank God that as we read through the chapter today we can be sanctified by truth. Read through the whole chapter now.
What do you learn about God?
What is he speaking to you about?
WE ARE A SURRENDERED PEOPLE
This passage talks a lot about glory. God being glorified - what does that mean? Honouring him, acknowledging his greatness, feeling and thinking and acting in ways that reflect his greatness, magnifying him, reflecting his character, his love, following him.
Jesus’ desire was to glorify the Father. What would glorifying God look like for you?
Spend some time surrendering afresh to living to glorify God over yourself.
This passage also talks a lot about unity. Consider what you might have to surrender to seek unity in the church.
WE ARE A SENT PEOPLE
What do you learn about making disciples from this passage? What is something you can do about this right this minute? Pause and do it!
Jesus said to the Father in verse 4: I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. What was that work? To declare and demonstrate the kingdom of God, to provide a way for us to know eternal life. He glorified the Father by finishing the work he was given. We too can glorify God by finishing the work he has given us. What has he asked us to do? One of the last things Jesus told his disciples to do was to: “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20We get to glorify God as we obey this command. Pray that you will be part of making disciples of all nations. What is one step you can take to obey this today?
