DAY 7: Psalm 110-the priest king

REFLECTION

Psalm 110 is the most frequently quoted psalm in the New Testament. It reveals Jesus's identity with remarkable clarity. He is the Lord seated at the right hand of the Father, exalted above every power and nation. He is the King who rules with authority and the Priest who intercedes on behalf of His people. When you see Jesus not only as Saviour but as reigning Lord, your fears begin to lose their power. Majesty shrinks anxiety.

David calls the Messiah “my Lord,” showing that this promised King is greater than any earthly ruler. Jesus uses this very psalm to reveal His divine identity (Matthew 22:41–46). He is not simply David’s descendant. He is David’s Lord. The Son of David who towers over King David himself.

The priestly promise of verse 4, “You are a priest forever,” is fulfilled in Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension. Jesus is not like any other priest. He will never have to offer a sacrifice for his own sin (Heb 7:1-25). Instead, this priest has himself been the sacrifice for your sins. And now, he is in heaven who lives to intercede for His people.

This means you are not forgotten. You are not left to navigate life alone. Right now, at the Father’s right hand, Jesus carries your name, your weakness, your calling, and your future into the presence of God. His intercession is not theoretical. It is personal and ongoing. He’s not just sending prayer emojis; the world's greatest prayer is praying in his own name for you right now!

Psalm 110 draws our hearts upward to the glory of Christ, and outward into the world He is renewing. It calls us to live under His authority with confidence, humility, and trust. The One who reigns over all things also prays for you.

GOSPEL READING

Matthew 22:41–46: (NIV)

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

“The son of David,” they replied.

43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[a]

45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • What areas of your life do you find hard to bring under the Lordship of Jesus?

  • How does knowing that Jesus intercedes for you strengthen your courage and faith?

  • What would it look like to live this week consciously aware that Christ reigns and Christ prays?

PRACTICING SURRENDER

Pray for five specific people by name who don’t know Jesus personally. Picture Jesus interceding for them as you do.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and forever.

Amen.
